An Integrity-First AI Tutor

Learn with AI — without crossing the line.

The AI Learning Coach is a Socratic AI tutor grounded in your professor's academic integrity policy. It guides students toward understanding instead of handing over answers, so AI helps you learn, not cheat.

90%
of students surveyed have avoided AI out of fear
75%
say AI policies differ significantly between classes

Great problem to work through! Before I jump in, what operation do you think we should start with to get x by itself?
Just give me the answer please
I hear you — but if I just gave you x, you'd miss the part that actually helps next time. Let's take one small step: what's the opposite of "+10"?

The Problem

Students don't usually turn to AI just for the sake of it — they turn to it when they're genuinely stuck or need a nudge to get back on track. But academic integrity policies differ wildly between courses, professors, and assignments, leaving students unsure when AI help crosses the line.

Our Solution

An AI tutor that reads your syllabus first, internalizes your professor's specific AI policy, then guides you Socratically — never giving final answers, always reinforcing learning.

75%
of surveyed students reported AI policies that differ significantly between their classes
90%
said they've avoided using AI for schoolwork out of fear of violating a policy
55%
are only "somewhat familiar" with their university's academic integrity policy on AI

Data collected from a survey of 20 Indiana University students conducted by our team in Spring 2026.

01 · How It Works

Three steps. One trusted tutor.

01
Upload your syllabus
The AI reads your professor's specific academic integrity policy and internalizes what's allowed for that course before any interaction.
02
Ask your question
Stuck on homework? Confused by a concept? Drafting an essay? Ask anything — the AI tailors its help to your course's rules.
03
Learn Socratically
The AI asks guiding questions, breaks problems into steps, and helps you reach the answer yourself — never doing the work for you.
02 · Our Process

How we built and tested this.

Over six weeks, our team followed a structured research, design, and testing process to develop the AI Learning Coach.

Week 1–2 · Discovery
Student Surveys
Distributed a Google Form survey to 20 Indiana University students to gather data on their familiarity with AI policies, experiences with inconsistent course rules, and reasons for avoiding AI tools.
Week 2 · Definition
Problem Exploration
Explored three potential AI solutions (Policy Translator, Ethical Usage Checker, AI Learning Coach) and chose the Coach as the most impactful approach to the integrity-versus-learning gap.
Week 2–3 · Design
Prompt Iteration
Ran multiple rounds of prompt experiments to refine the Socratic tutoring behavior, including testing how the AI handles adversarial requests like "just give me the answer."
Week 3 · Build
Prototype Development
Built the AI Learning Coach prototype using ChatGPT EDU as a research environment, grounding every response in the uploaded syllabus and academic integrity policy.
Week 4 · Test
User Testing
Conducted user testing with five undergraduate students across three realistic scenarios: getting unstuck on homework, requesting direct answers, and asking for concept clarification.
Week 5–6 · Refine
Ethics Review & Refinement
Completed a Responsible AI review to identify ethical risks, then refined the prompt to lead with helpful guidance, flag vague syllabi, and reinforce verification with professors.
